Sir Ridley Scott is no stranger to experimental cinema Blade Runner the director once again proved that he wants to go against the tide with a new short film shot entirely with the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.
The three-minute production aims to showcase the impressive capabilities of the S23 Ultra. In addition to the improved “Nightography” features over the Galaxy S22 Ultra, Samsung’s latest flagship includes a huge 200MP sensor and integrated Expert RAW recording that supports up to 50MP footage.
entitled See and written by Luke Scott, the short follows “a young man faced with hostility and aggression, pursued in a world where he is forced to find an escape [and] your own version of peace. Check it out in 4K below:
Due to its length (or lack of it), See is clearly more of a meditative film than others in Scott’s full-length repertoire. According to a press release sent to TechRadar: “See refers to the maxim – beauty is in the eye of the beholder, encouraging viewers to find a glimmer of beauty within a difficult environment, to look for value in things that have been rejected.”
As for how Scott found the experience filming the Galaxy S23 Ultra, the director explained in a behind-the-scenes video (which we’ve included below): “I thought it was [was] great challenge. A very interesting challenge. Because the scary thing is that this little facility will take the place of all the big cameras, which is great. And by spinning the phone, we could access real environments and smaller spaces.”
Scott’s cinematographer Flavio Labiano added that while he was “fearful” the Galaxy S23 Ultra wouldn’t give him “a range of options” [he normally has] available while working”, was “pleasantly surprised” by its versatility, praising the “image quality and dynamic range of the sensor”.
Of course, See it was made using a set of camera grips and professional lighting equipment, but the fact remains that the Galaxy S23 Ultra is almost certainly one of the best camera phones money can buy (its predecessor is currently at the top of our list, but probably will be dethroned when we finish testing the S23 Ultra).
In particular, the wide shots have a truly cinematic quality in Scott’s short, and the S23 Ultra’s superior “Nightography” capabilities over the S22 Ultra are clearly evident throughout. Check out some shots from See below:
This isn’t the first time Samsung has partnered with a well-known filmmaker to show off its latest phone. in 2021 Anna Karenina director Joe Wright released the award-winning short film Princess and Pepper Nose, which he shot entirely with the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. A separate film, S23, by South Korean director Na Hong-jin is also in the works.
Perhaps next year we’ll see Scorsese take the Samsung Galaxy S24 for a spin?
